Tennis - DSTV Obvius

Tennis is a sport in which two players (singles) or four players (doubles) hit a ball over a net using a racket. The aim is to place the ball in such a way that the opponent cannot return it properly. The sport combines technique, speed and tactical awareness. Players use a variety of shots, such as the forehand, backhand and serve. Tennis can be played on different surfaces and is suitable for both recreational and competitive players.

Association training - All levels

Tennis association DSTV Obvius organises tennis training sessions in collaboration with X. The only way to participate in these tennis training sessions is as a member of this association or as a member of S.V.T.V. Tenniphil.

The association gives its own twist to the training sessions, but they are usually quite similar. After a warming-up, you will practice hitting a ball over the net with a partner. This prepares your muscles for the rest of the training session drills and exercises in a controlled way. Then you will focus on improving your technique by completing a number of drills; usually, someone will hit or throw the ball towards you so you can practice various shots, or you will practice techniques by rallying with a partner. Once you have got to grips with the various shots and techniques, you will learn how to use them in a game situation. The training sessions usually end with a practice game.

For beginners and intermediate players, the focus is on learning the basic techniques (e.g., creating topspin on the forehand and backhand), tactics (set-ups/positions and ball placement) and learning how to predict where the opponent is going to return the ball. In the competition period, advanced players will have the chance to brush up on their technique but the main focus is on applying those techniques in a game situation. They will also devote more time to improving their fitness level, and completing tactical (e.g., poaching/intercepting the ball at the net in a doubles game) and mental exercises. During a block of training sessions, you will cover all the different kinds of game situations (serving, returning the serve, baseline game, approaching the net and net game, and opposing the net player) and you will also play both single and doubles.
