Tennis
Tennis is a sport in which two players (singles) or four players (doubles) hit a ball over a net using a racket. The aim is to place the ball in such a way that the opponent cannot return it properly. The sport combines technique, speed and tactical awareness. Players use a variety of shots, such as the forehand, backhand and serve. Tennis can be played on different surfaces and is suitable for both recreational and competitive players.
Course levels
You can join a tennis course on one of the four levels:
(If in doubt, it is best to sign up at a lower level).
Level Indicator: Beginners
- You’ve never played tennis before, or only a few times.
- You’re not yet familiar with the rules.
- You’re still struggling to return the ball consistently.
Level Indicator: Intermediate
- You’ve had a few lessons or some casual playing experience.
- You can rally a few shots, but still find it hard to control direction, pace, and consistency.
Level Indicator: Advanced
- You play regularly.
- You have a fairly stable command of the basic strokes.
- You can rally with some variation in speed and direction.
Level Indicator: Advanced Plus
- You’re an experienced competitive player.
- You play league or tournament matches at a high level.
- Reference level: KNLTB rating 4 or better.
Each lesson starts with a warming-up, after which you will work through various exercises that focus on improving your stroke technique, including your serve, smash and volley or your forehand and backhand. At the end of the lesson, you will often play a quick game against one of the other participants. X has one expert group level for the most fanatical tennis players of TU Delft. They will train with each other on a weekly basis, improve their technique and keep up their level. This training is open to participants with at least KNLTB level 4 (or lower).

Clothing and equipment
Wear comfortable sportswear. Make sure you have clean trainers that are suitable for the type of court you’re playing on. Bring your own tennis racket and tennis balls.
Two types of courts
At X you can play on two types of courts: courts 1 to 4 are hard courts and courts 5 to 14 are smash courts. The courses take place on courts 1 to 7. In winter there is a balloon hall on courts 1 to 4, giving you the opportunity to play indoor tennis.
