Open Studio: Ceramics
Clay is a material with enormous potential that has been used centuries to make everyday objects, from pottery, tableware, tiles and bricks. When clay is fired in a hot air kiln, the material transforms in its definite shape and becomes ceramics. Ceramics comes in three types: porcelain, stoneware and crockery; depending on the purity of the clay and the temperature at which it was fired. There are many different techniques to design ceramics. The clay objects can then be decorated and glazed after being fired.
Open Studio
During the Open Studio, you’ll have the opportunity to continue working independently on your ceramics projects. You’ll use the techniques, tools and materials you’ve learnt to work with during the classes. You can also purchase clay, glaze, slip, pigments and plaster.
Please note that registering for Open Studio Ceramics does not entitle you to use a potter’s wheel. If you wish to book a potter’s wheel, you can register for the ‘Open Studio Pottery’ ticket hour. Occasionally, a potter’s wheel may be available during Open Studio Ceramics, but we cannot guarantee this.
The Open Studio assistant will be on hand to offer tips and advice where necessary and to ensure that materials and equipment are used responsibly and safely.
Important:
Open Studio Ceramics is open to participants with an X membership who have completed the ‘Ceramics’ course. Participation is possible when an Open Studio assistant is present. If you have gained experience in ceramics elsewhere, you may also take part with the permission of one of the teachers. The teachers are present at the end of the afternoon and in the evening on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
