Screenprinting: Analogue Posters

Screen printing is a versatile graphic technique used to produce high-quality posters and other printed works. It allows for both painterly and precise results and is known for its vibrant colours and sharp details. In screen printing, ink is pushed through a fine mesh onto a surface using a squeegee, while blocked areas of the mesh create the desired shapes. A screen print can consist of one or multiple layers of colour, be produced as a series or as a unique print, and — with the right ink — can be applied to almost any material.

Group course - All levels

In the course Screen Printing: Analogue Posters, you will discover how to translate an idea into a poster with real impact. You will explore both the history of poster design and the technique of screen printing. Step by step, and all by hand, you work towards your own design and final print. Using scissors, glue and paper, you develop your concept, which you ultimately produce yourself using screen printing.

Graphic designer Auke guides you through the work of iconic makers and movements — from the anarchist posters of the Provo movement to Banksy, via Adbusters and on to Hang Youth. What do you want to say, and how will you express it visually?

Over the course of several weeks, you will learn how to design a powerful poster and print it yourself. Do you want to communicate a message, disrupt expectations or throw your audience off balance? Or would you rather make a razor-sharp joke?

We conclude the course by taking to the streets and wild posting our own posters.

Auke Triesschijn

Auke studied at the University of the Arts in Utrecht and has since worked as a freelance graphic designer. He uses many different techniques and styles in his work and makes extensive use of analogue printing techniques such as screen printing and riso printing. Auke enjoys helping people find their own style and visual voice.
