Screen Printing: Textile Patterns

Screen printing is a versatile graphic technique used to produce high-quality posters and other printed works. It allows for both painterly and precise results and is known for its vibrant colours and sharp details. In screen printing, ink is pushed through a fine mesh onto a surface using a squeegee, while blocked areas of the mesh create the desired shapes. A screen print can consist of one or multiple layers of colour, be produced as a series or as a unique print, and — with the right ink — can be applied to almost any material.

Group course – All levels

In the course Screen Printing: Textile Patterns, you will discover how to turn simple shapes, colours and ideas into eye-catching patterns. You will explore the basics of pattern design and learn how a single drawing can grow into a repeating visual. Using analog, hands-on techniques you will develop your own pattern and bring it to life through screen printing.

Graphic designer Auke Triesschijn guides you through the world of patterns — from digital designs in Illustrator and Photoshop to experimental analogue techniques using markers, pens, scissors, tape and collage. How do you create rhythm, repetition and balance? And how do you turn it into a bold and playful design?

Over the course of 7 weeks, you will learn how to build a pattern, create seamless repeats and prepare your design for screen printing. You will print your own creation on fabric, for example a tote bag, unbleached cotton from which you can then create garments, or (wrapping) paper, experimenting with colour, composition and technique.

At the end of the course, you will take home your own printed pattern and the skills to keep creating new ones.

Ready to turn your ideas into something you can see, touch and use?
