Leatherworking

Leatherworking is a craft rooted in precision, patience, and attention to detail. The entire process, from cutting to finishing, is done by hand. A signature technique is the saddle stitch, where two needles and strong thread are used to create a durable, long-lasting seam. Traditional tools are essential: pricking irons to mark stitching holes, a burnishing stick and leather cream to smooth and polish the edges, and tools like a bone folder or straightedge for sharpening blades and making clean folds. While machines can speed up production, many fashion houses still favour this artisanal approach. Valuing the quality, durability, and refined finish that handcrafting provides.

Group course - All levels

In this course, you will work with high-quality leather to create unique, handmade products. You will start by making a bag, such as a festival bag or tote bag. If there is time, you can also make smaller accessories, such as a phone case, glasses case, wallet or AirPods case.

Patterns are available for you to use during the course or, if you have an X membership, during Open Studio hours. Once you have mastered the basics, you can also bring your own design to life, as long as it is suitable for beginners. You might choose to make a larger bag or laptop sleeve, or focus on smaller items.

Throughout the course, you will get to know a range of tools and techniques. Discover the art of leatherworking and create functional objects with your own personal style.

Nathasja Croon is a certified artisan bag maker, trained at Cursustassenmaken.nl with a specialisation in hand stitching. After completing her training, she launched her own label and has since created a variety of unique bags.
